Here at Darwin’s Metal Detectors, Metal Detecting is our number one hobby, and is the one I enjoy the most. By the size of this online catalog you can see how much time I spend outdoors metal detecting and having fun. Gem and gold prospecting is also lot of fun for the whole family. You can go on a camping trip and enjoy panning for gold hunting for gemstones.
We try to keep our site up to date with new products for metal detecting and gem/gold prospecting. Here on the West Coast winter storms do great wonders, even when we have a drought metal detecting is great. The water at the lakes are low so it is easier to detect for the lost rings, jewelry, coins and even artifacts.  It's not always the same as some may think, but generally detecting and prospecting is an all year round hobby and has been real productive with only a few exceptions.
When I bought my first metal detector "WOW" I was like a kid at a birthday party I just could not wait to get out the door and use the detector. I headed to the beach like lightning. I did not even take time to read the manual. I was so excited about my new adventure of metal detecting. I found my first dine in about five minutes. This is it! Just what I dreamed of digging in the sand (dirt) finding those hidden treasures. Everyday after work I could not wait to get to the beach and start using my detector. That has been over 15 years ago and I still love detecting.

FAQs:

How deep will a detector go?
This is the question most frequently asked. Unfortunately, it has no absolute answers. The following variables all have an effect on the answer. Conductive properties of the soil. Heavy mineralized soil will tend to reduce the penetration power of the detector. Soil mineralization may vary greatly. The length of time an object is buried. The size of an object, the shape of an object, the degree of magnetization.
I am new at detecting, what kind of detector should I use?
You must ask yourself a question. how often will I use a detector? just when going camping once a year or on a weekend once in a while. There are great detectors for that purpose, turn on-go detectors. the cost is low $45.00- $120.00 they generally do not have a discriminator and will find a lot on metal including what is called junk, nails washers, wire, pull tabs, etc. detectors that have discriminators, pin-pointers, will be able to eliminate the junk and find more valuable targets which make detecting more enjoyable of course the cost is higher for the technology $150.00-$500.00 For the serious detectorist the detectors have advanced technology $600.00-up. This type of detector is also great for a beginner or novelist, finding one gold/diamond ring on the beach worth $1,500.00 and the excitment is well worth the cost.
I want a detector that will be universal find, gold, gold coins, jewelry, relics?
All detectors will detect all metals including gold nuggets. The problem is detectors that are set up for finding coins, relics, and jewelry the coil and control box are set up to find those objects and will only find small gold nuggets. the KHz frequency is different in coins then in gold nuggets. A gold detector is best to use when searching for gold nuggets. A detector that is able to change the coil from coins, etc. to coils for gold nuggets would be a universal detector.
What is Discrimination?
Discrimination is the ability of a metal detector to identify the type of metal located and eliminate unwanted material such as junk or trash items, iron, steel, pull-tabs. Discrimination measures the leval of conductivity of a metal object. This conductivity range determins what type of metal is being detected.
I want to hunt at the beaches, what kind of tools are best to use?
The best kind of to to use at a beach is called a sand scoop which is a wire basket with a handle. A plastic scoop can be used it looks like a large spoon. Even a coffee can would work with holes in the bottom. Check out our page on Sand scops & diggers
Why are there so many sizes of coils?
Several coil sizes are usually offered for each detector. Each size offers specific strengths and weaknesses. A small coil is better than a larger coil for picking out good targets among many trash targets. Larger coils are best suited for low-mineralization areas. They cover more ground and increase depth penetration 5-20 percent.
Why do I need headphones?
Headphones can greatly reduce outside noise (wind,Traffic,Waves, distraction, etc.) They also enhance the audio target signal, which will help you determine which targets to dig and which targets to ignore. Overall, a good set of headphones will improve the number of good finds and greatly reduce the time you spend digging trash.
What is the best gold pan to use?
